Intelligent Systems in Government and Public Sector

Federal, state, and local agencies across the United States have deployed intelligent systems for tasks ranging from benefits eligibility determination to predictive policing, fraud detection, and infrastructure monitoring. Definition and scope

How it works

Intelligent systems in public agencies operate through a layered architecture that typically includes four phases:

Benefits eligibility determination — Agencies including the Social Security Administration and state Medicaid programs use ML models to flag applications for expedited processing or to identify potential fraud. Reversibility vs. irreversibility — Systems whose outputs can be corrected without lasting harm (e.g., routing a citizen inquiry to the right department) tolerate higher error rates than systems whose outputs trigger detention, benefit termination, or child removal.
